Review from David Worth by David Worth
I have just returned from 3 nights at Arnhem Stayokay, a very comfortable hostel and extremely friendly staff, good food and everything is so clean. Good beer in Palm and very reasonale in price. being disabled the climb to the pemesis was a bit daunting either by the steps or the road with my luggage from the trolleybus stop, I did apprecaite the kindness of the drivers who let me off at the road junction thus saving a little of the hill. Arnhem is an attrractive city and the Citys Historic Museum is a ,must even just for the pottery and paintings at present there is a Barbie doll exhibition there.
I do hope to be back at Arnhem Stayokay again in the future and explore even more of the city.
As a note the fare is 1.6 euro from Centraal station to the hostel but walk to the next stop and its 1 euro!
Stayokay hostels are *not* great party places - but they are more than adequate if you want a comfortable night's sleep and, in the case of Stayokay Arnhem, in pleasant surroundings. Within easy reach of both the city and some great countryside, I imagine this would be a great base for a short cycling holiday, allowing you to see a bit of the city's nightlife in the evening. Arnhem is rather sleepy though, and the location of the hostel (it's not really too central) and the early curfew (midnight) mean that it really only will be "a bit" of nightlife. The bar is quite good by hostel standards, with at least a couple of decent beers available, and it would be fine to spend an evening there in the right company. However, be prepared for the ubiquitous school kids on school outings, and the gaggles of middle-aged (mostly German) cyclists, who really give many hostels of this kind a slightly 'holiday camp' feel. If that's ok with you (or if you just want a good night's sleep at relatively low expense in clean, comfortable surroundings), Arnhem Stayokay is fine.
Stayokay Arnhem is situated at the edge of the vast Hoge Veluwe forest, and yet close to the city. You walk into the main hall featuring the bar and lounge: friendly places for meeting other guests. Enjoy a delicious dinner in our Sonsbeek restaurant. Groups can request fondue or barbecue dinners and cold or hot buffets. Bedrooms are located in separate wings and all feature private sanitary facilities. Stayokay Arnhem has a garden with terrace for relaxing in summertime.
