Hostel is ok but if its the best u have stayed at so far then i think u have had a bad trot. The 4 person room above the common room is were i stayed and it was a nightmare hot as at night due to the air con not working to its full potential and dripping water out the front constantly. Free boardband yeah thats correct but not unlimited its only 30mins a day which is better than a kick in the teeth. And for those that dont know Joo charit road is prostitute central at night walk out the door and there is hookers every where! i mean all down the rd! As for the pub crawl that was cancelled which sucked as theres not a heap to do in singapore if ur not loaded with cash and there was a few of us really looking forward to it! Cheers
Betel Box is like a home away from home. I had a great time staying here. The hosts are so friendly and responds quickly to every needs and inquiry. T.K. is such a cool and nice guy. Tony is like Mr. Amity and a friend to everyone. Wendy is a lovely host. Oh and I love the free breakfast meal-fruits, toasts and jams, free flowing coffee, tea or whatever they offer. They even have a guest fridge for us. And even if you share room with others you can just leave your things, valuable or not in your bed or anywhere and no one will even touch it. I can attest to that absolutely. You dont even need to have your own locker. And whats more....free internet till wee hours of the morning. I will definitely recommend betel box to all of my friends back home. Thanks guys and keep it up!
First things first. Having got carried away and hung out for Christmas and New Year at the Betel Box, my opinion is one of an infallible papal pronouncment. Now as to to the matter of the establishment itself; there was the food-walk that commenced at 7am and finished at a very jolly 5pm, the impromtu Christmas party that was somewhat reminescent of Rio carnivval, a streamer spray-can thing with the neighbouring bars, and a locale that will provide for you in all manner of ways, and still leave you lusting forever for Chilli Crab. And the people? Give us a hug. Does that not sound enticing; certainly leaves me feeling a little nostalgic, even a touch tearful. The less said about the strip Extreme Jenga the better; I will just leave it there as a teasing signature. By the by, and most importantly, If you want and you like, you can just chill and chill and chill at at the BB. So, come, see, hang out and have a good stay.
Nice hostel and very friendly and great staff
The best hostel that I've been so far! Friendly and helpful staff, clean, and warm atmosphere. Free internet and Tony's favorite foodwalk on Tuesdays. It's just another home in Singapore!
I've never stayed at another hostel*. Nevertheless Tony is an awesome host. He works harder than anyone I know so far (I'm only 22 years old). Other hostels and potential "entrepreneurs" have attempted to copy the hostels inner workings, but since I haven't visited those hostels I don't know if they did a good job. While I stayed in Singapore I became more of a man, but I think the location had nothing to do with it. I didn't read other reviews because I don't trust backpackers. I don't carry a backpack. Only two sportsbags. I trust myself. I thought you should know that. I'm not drunk right now.** I prefer to drink water and bodily fluids over beer, but if want to drink pinneaple juice (I like pinneaple juice too,) I can get it from the refrigerator at this hostel.
Now that I've revealed a little bit about myself, and that you trust me as a consequence of the aforementioned first part of this sentence, I can tell you a little bit about this hostel...
It's clean all the time. There is delicious fruit freshly cut in the mornings.
There is Nutella and other good stuff.
The people who come stay here are usually very fun people. But for some reason the presence of Tony and Mark and other regulars makes this a very friendly and comfortable environment.
Tony's foodwalk is a very nice and relatively cheap way to try different local food and see Joo Chiat at night.
The hostel currently comes with two flavors of air conditioning. The lower level is more than cold enough to remind you of Alaskan breeze in the summer while the upper level is warm enough to very comfortably get acclimated to the Singapore heat. If you want a slightly different flavor, the wonderful hosts will likely turn the AC up or down upon your request.
The internet is quite a commodity. I got letters from girlfriends and a job in (country name removed for my own personal self-privacy) ((redundancy intended)) while staying here. The hostel is not far from the main post office and an MRT station, so Singapore is more accessible than the nearest bathroom.
This hostel is truly a comfortable place, and calling it a second home would not be far from the truth should you decide to stay over two weeks.
*After I typed that sentence I remembered I stayed at a hostel in . But this hostel is still the best I've ever stayed at.
**But if I chose to be, I could also easily take a beer from the refrigerator, instead of going to the street and seeing the real Singapore***
***Actually the architecture in this hostel is from the old and real Singapore and by law, this building cannot be destroyed, so you could technically stay only in the hostel and appreciate real Singaporean architecture.
The Betel Box Backpacker Hostel is located on Joo Chiat Road, which is at the heart of Singapore's famous Katong and Geylang Serai district. The hostel is within easy reach of Changi International Airport and all the sights and attractions of Singapore.
One of Singapore's best attractions is the wide variety of food on offer and the lively area around the hostel has many famous restaurants, food stalls and kopi tiams (local coffee shops).
The hostel is close to the East Coast beach where you can swim, rent BBQs, bikes and rollerblades and where you can enjoy the free Big Splash water slides and swimming pools. If thats not enough exercise for you, you are more than welcome to use our corporate cards for the fully-fitted gym down the road.
Every week we organise activites, including Tony's Famous Foodwalk on Thursday in the area around the hostel. On this walk you will get a chance to sample some of the best food Singapore has to offer and it is a great way to meet fellow travellers!
Our accommodation is in comfortable air-conditioned dormitory rooms with hot and cold showers.
We also have a large communal area with guest kitchen, dining area, lounge area, Internet terminals (Internet access is free!) and hundreds of books and magazines.
There is no curfew at the hostel; we have an electronic keypad lock at the front door, which means you can come and go as you wish, any time of the day.
The price per night includes a comfortable bed, bed linen, security locker, unlimited broadband Internet access (it is all free!) and breakfast. Breakfast consists of fresh local and common fruits, toast with spreads and toppings and fresh coffee and tea. You can have your breakfast at any time and coffee and tea is free-flow all day long.
We hope to see you in Singapore!
