Authentic Qing (but rustic) family-run hostel by DexGuy
We stayed in this old-town hostel (actually more like a set of courtyards) for some days. We loved it.
Unlike most of the Pingyao hotels, this was not all shiny and 'restored' but is authentically lived-in. This gave it a warm and hospitable feeling (not alienating and perfect like those on the main streets).
It was also far cheaper (we were quoted just 120RMB before haggling). It also had a modern en-suite shower with Western toilet. We also enjoyed playing with their puppy which kinda added to the real-feeling.
I'd recommend this place as you'd be helping a real Pingyao family and experience a genuine (albeit slightly ruined) ancient house setting. We saw some of the best one in Pingyao but the ironed uniforms of the attendants and perfect wallpaper put us off. Our hosts were more like friends.
Problem: they don't speak English (yet). They have a daughter who visits and can speak English so could translate your email/call. But unless you have a Chinese person with you, you may have trouble haggling.
