If you would like to stay near the airport, consider the Hotel Green Day (Hotel Dia Verde) in Alajuela. About five minutes from the airport, this small family-run hotel is inexpensive, very pleasant, and easily accessible by bus (the San Jose-Alajuela bus from the stop directly in front of the airport) for less than a dollar or taxi for about $4-5 dollars. I have stayed here several times and Randall (excellent English) and his wife Rosemary have always been very pleasant. For about $30-with breakfast-the Hotel Green Day is a good option for travelers just arriving or leaving the next day.
