The pub was the best place we stayed in while in NZ. We found the locals so friendly and welcoming. The accommodation was clean and private and the staff were very helpful. An absolute must see!
The Dunollie Ranch backpackers was one of the highlights to nz for me!
It was such a laugh, the toothless locals were staunch but were eager to buy you drinks just to have a chat and were a great sauce of entertainment!
It did rain one of the days we were there, but there was lots to do and we found ourselfs (3 ozzy chicks) going cave rafting which was a real adventure!
The following day was sunny and we took the opportunity to take a free bikeride out to the coast where we had the entire beach to ourselfs .... it was amazing!!!!
the hostel was warm and cosy especailly with a nice fire to sit buy!
what an experience!, I'll be back!

p.s I loved the bubble bath complete with rubber duckie!
Too cold, rained all the time - I know the weather is not their fault, but there wasnt anything to do because of this, the hostel was very boring. Lots of old fellas around too, some of them are permanent residents, so if thats not your thing best stay away. The town is little more than a handful of shops, so if you want to party/shop stay in Greymouth.
I can't say a single thing bad about this hostel. This will be my longest and best memory of New Zealand. This hostel is not like the many other typical touristy places. Lots of interesting real local kiwi's to meet. There is a wonderful waterfall and beach walk as well. This was my favorite hostel in New Zealand so far. Very unique. Kate Banks West Midland England
A very small, old hostel situated about 30mins from Greymouth. This region is known for its rain and cold 365 days a year so try to give this area of the coast a miss if you can. Pancake rocks, about an hour and a half north, is a nice place, so Id recommend staying a little closer. I stayed my first night in Dunollie and found it very cold, boring, and miserable. It is fronted by an old miners bar, complete with old men who dislike tourists so it is hard to understand why the owner decided to turn it into a hostel. Some of these old, toothless men share your rooms so if you are a female Id recommend getting your own private room or staying elsewhere.
I stayed in Barrytown, near Pancake Rocks on my second night and found it to be excellent so Id recommend staying there instead. The hostel is warm and run by young staffers and there are no old men gawking at you all the time.
Give it a miss if you can!
V cold and lots of old men who dont like tourists. Stay away.
