Planning Help for Backpackers
|

How much time do I need?
In our opinion if you've only got two weeks holiday I would still
go backpacking. Two weeks backpacking will seem like a month at the
end of it. To see Europe fleetingly you'll need 2 - 3 months. If you
don't have much time it is better to see a few countries properly
than try to cram the whole of Europe into your travels.
When should I travel?
As long as you don't travel in the middle of either the peak or off-peak
season you'll have a great time.
If you travel in the peak season all the attractions and hostels will
be open but they will also be very busy and you may not be able to
get in. You'll also meet lots of other backpackers because of this.
The weather will be warmer so you can wear lighter clothing and you'll
have a more pleasant time taking in all the sights.
Traveling off-peak will have the advantages of less crowding at hostels
and sights. As a result you won't meet as many fellow backpackers
and some hostels and sights may even be close ( prices may be reduces
as well ). The weather will be cooler and you'll need to bring bulky
warm clothing. e.g. if you visit Berlin mid-January you'll experience
-25 C temperatures.
Where should I go?
It depends where you are and what you want to do. For first time travelers
I suggest a tour of Europe. There are some many countries packed closely
together and linked by efficient high speed rail networks and a plethora
of bus and car travel schemes for cheap travel. From any country in
Europe you are never more than a matter of hours away from the next
country and culture. You'll find backpackers' hostels in every major
city you visit and most capital cities have organizations especially
for budget travelers. |
