Title: Neighbours Night
Website:
The day began with a trip to the chemist. Today of all days I wanted to feel at my peak, after all, the Neighbours night in Melbourne was one of the highlights of my true ‘Aussie backpacker experience’ or so I had been told. I also decided to buy a memory card for my new camera because the worst thing would be not being able to prove my existence at this event not just to myself but also to those back home.      The rest of the day passed pretty harmlessly as the event drew closer. I had some food and then on to the alcohol at approximately 16:00 hrs.  Although the night is a cult classic amongst the English twentysomethings I had been informed that the night must be experienced under the influence of alcohol to appreciate cult characters such as Paul Robinson and the enigmatic presence of Karl Kennedy.      As we arrived at the corner of the Elephant and Wheelbarrow pub in St. Kilda we noticed the queue to get in was already stretching far around the corner. I had arrived with 3 friends and after a hasty conference we realised that the length of the queue did not matter as it was an all ticket affair and we already had purchased our tickets in  advance. The affect of the alcohol was beginning to kick in. The sun was shining, people were laughing and I received a quick phone call as I was waiting ,’Hey I can see you in the queue!’. One of my friends was just passing by on a tram and although I could not see him I waved frantically as though this was the biggest moment of my life.      A short time later we were there and after a nervous 2 minutes when the frustrated looking woman at the door could not locate my name on the list, we were in. We had a couple more drinks to ease the tension and then out of nowhere Karl Kennedy bounded on stage. Karl Kennedy a.k.a. Alan Fletcher knows how to work a crowd and this night was no exception. He introduced members of the cast and then the musical acts began featuring many of current stars.      The highlight of the night itself for many is that ultimate nieghbours picture and my turn soon arrived when Karl Kennedy tapped me and my friend on the shoulder and asked ,’so boys, are we having a photo then?!’ The answer to this was an embarrassingly hurried,’ yes!’ and as we posed we realised one of our Australian dreams had been completed. Karl in turn also seemed happy with this outcome and he soon after went on stage to perform some chart classics as the crowd went crazy. The night ended at an unknown happy hour with intense discussions about how ‘this was the best night ever’ and as we left we thanked our lucky stars that for one night at least we were able to literally rub shoulders with those lucky stars.
