City Overview
Once Cairns was an idyllic spot in Australia, then the tourist trade cast it eye over the amazing potential offered by the climate, location and spectacular scenery of Cape Tribulation, the tropical rainforest, and Daintree River. The accessibility to the Atherton Tableland, Great Barrier Reef, and the string of pristine beaches reaching as far as Port Douglas added to Cairns charm and its money garnering ability.
Today Cairns is still spectacular, even though there is a massive tourist infrastructure and overrun with sightseers, it is still a backpackers dream with fantastic hiking, sun-worshiping, and swimming. A complete backpacker scene in Cairns offers bars and pubs that cater specifically for budget travellers, throwing in a shuttle bus pick-up service.
Daily Budget
Food in Australia is affordable and good value, and accommodation is reasonable, but traveling costs are horrendous as it is such an enormous country, however, if you stay in hostels, or camp and self cater, and then budget on about $8 USD for meals, and $22 USD for lodging and it will be just possible to come out on about $34USD a day. For $63USD a day, you could eat out occasionally, and stay in budget hotels as well as doing a spot of traveling about.
Definite Musts
Cairns has some things that are just not easily found anywhere else. The range of tours to the great barrier reef is wide and so are the prices and standards, shop for what suits you best. If you are after getting your dive ticket, Cairns is also the best place, as the level of competition amongst the local dive companies is competitive.
Another must, is a hot air balloon ride, a splurge for any backpacker but consider that the balloon rides here include everything and are still $90 USD cheaper than anywhere else in the southern hemisphere. The reason backpackers look for affordable food and hostels is so they can travel and experience the things really worth doing, these 3 are definite musts to do when you travel to Cairns.
