Country Overview
This country of remote forests and mighty rivers running to the sea where quiet beaches lie, is only just making itself known to the tourist crowd. Still recovering from years of war and isolation it is becoming the latest place on the South-East Asian travel map, but it is not yet somewhere to take long, lonely hikes into its countryside, dotted as it is with over six million landmines, and other remnants of its battle. So unless you are looking for a blast of a different kind, and don't fancy being 'blown away' by something other than the magnificent scenery and ancient temples, better follow a knowledgeable guide who will keep you safe and introduce you to a magnificent and friendly country.
Daily Budget
Stop the presses! Oyez, Oyez! US$10 a day only, I said US$10 a day only, for your daily budget in Cambodia! Here lodging can be as cheap as US$5 and meals only US$2-4, for bottom feeders, that is, but if you want more comfort and good meals then US$15-25 is more on the mark. Transport and travelling can is also very reasonable, with entrance fees around US$20.
When to Go!
December and January is the best time to visit Cambodia, any other time it is either unbearably hot or unbearably soggy, but having said that the biggest festival in the country is held in November, Bon Om Tuk, (the reversing of the river current), and it would be a shame to miss this strange happening when the current of the Tonlé Sap river actually changes direction. Another lively event takes place in mid April, when the Lunar New Year is celebrated in a riotous three days of festivities and fun.
