City Overview
Dynamic and fast paced, Beijing is certainly part of today, with towering concrete and glass high-rises and over a hundred flyovers, but yesterday can still be found in the magnificence of the Forbidden City, temples and teahouses and old men sitting in the sun smoking their pipes.
Beijing is also home to thousands of American expats, whose brash fast food culture has followed them, so that in a country of noodles and delicate cuisine McDonalds and like thrive, along with Internet cafes and western music.
Daily Budget
Backpackers and budget travellers should be able to get by on US$1-2 for meals, and about US$25-35 for accommodation, but to be safe plan on spending about US$50 a day, as although food is generally cheap, train journeys can chow your cash.
