This deeply traditional place, with an overall population of 1.41 million souls makes its money from industries that range from food, clothing, and woodworking to oil shale and metals, and is still recovering from its early years of independence. It is also trying to attract tourism and offers an appealing, and inexpensive destination where you won’t break your fragile budget if you take the opportunity to visit.

Daily Budget
If our budget conscious backpacker chooses to camp, with meals at coming at a mere US$1-10 and campsite cabins US$8 per person, US$75 a day will cover everything including sight-seeing and travel.

When to Go!
Summer, from June to the start of September, and spring, from April to May is the best time to visit, climate wise, unless you are into skiing and winter activities, then December to March become the better option in Estonia’s winter months.

23 June, the eve of Jaanipaev sees a climax to the Memme-taadi Days, a celebration of folk culture. August and the White Lady Festival is when Haapsalu, Estonia’s most famous ghost, puts in an appearance, and is also the time of choosing a new king for the traditional Setu kingdom.
