Country Overview
The Greek Gods and Goddesses can still be found in this ancient land, only today they are more than likely wearing jeans and sneakers, and probably drinking coffee under the trees of a plateia, or dancing the floor raw in a neon disco, instead killing each other and other unfortunates in the dusty arena of the Coliseum.
Greece and its islands is filled with the stuff of life, from Athens and its chaotic, smog-filled, heart-stopping pace to sun-bright beaches on the Aegean coast, every dream and every fantasy comes true in this country that is a gift form the gods.
Daily Budget
If you are prepared to hitch rides, camp or stay in hostels, and do a whole lot of self catering with not much drinking, then you could come out on US$50 a day, but it wouldn't be much fun. However for US$100 per day, you could get a private room, eat decently and check out the sights, and, for a really good holiday US$150 per day will get you a whole lot of fun and more than enough memories to last a lifetime.
When to Go!
Beaches and archaeological sites are somewhat quieter over Easter and mid-June, with accommodation cheaper, yet public transport operating at full capacity just before the high season, and again from the end of August to mid-October when the screaming hordes of invading tourist begin to leave. In winter nothing much happens with everything and everyone in a state of comatose hibernation from mid-October to April. There are some great deals for accommodation in Greece on http://www.bedsingreece.com/.
In villages in northern Greece on the 8 January women strike back with Gynaikratia, a day of role reversal when they get to do what the men usually do, hang around cafes and talk crap, while the men stay at home doing the housework. Over February-March the Greek carnival comes to town, with fancy dress, feasting, traditional dancing and general partying for the three weeks before Easter.
