Country Overview
With countryside of beautiful lakes, rustic villages and towns with ornate baroque architecture, Hungary is a scenic and colourful place.
It also has great wines, thermal spas, and a thriving arts and music scene in its capital Budapest, and will call to you when you back home in your old familiar places. If you have the cash you will answer that call, because Hungary will steal your heart and linger in your memory forever.
Daily Budget
Hungary is a backpacker's delight as it is so cheap to explore, and US$25 a day can provide a holiday staying in private rooms, eating at reasonable restaurants and 2nd-class train travel. Of course you can cut costs even further by staying in hostels, camping and grabbing chow from food stalls.
When to Go!
Summer is long and leisurely in Hungary, with crowded resorts over July and August, after which life grinds to a standstill, but autumn is beautiful, and spring a joy. Winter is not so good, cold and bleak and pretty much dead.
The Budapest Spring Festival in March is an extravaganza of culture with local and international performances and exhibitions. In August in the town of Nagykálló; the Folk Arts Festival is one of the best events of the year, with Hungary's top Jazz festival held in September in Debrecen.
