City Overview
This is India's fourth largest city and is the capital of Tamil Nadu state. Chennai is basically a conglomerate of overgrown villages and it can be divided into two main parts. The older section, George Town, is near the dock area northeast of Periyar EVR High Road. The streets are narrow, there are some cheaper hotels, restaurants and bazaars.
The other section of the city is south of the Periyar EVR High Road. Here you'll find theatres, banks, bookshops, craft centres, consulates, tourist offices and top-range hotels and restaurants.
Daily Budget
A backpacker staying here can manage on about US$30 which will see them through 3 meals and accommodation. If you stay in slightly more pricey hotels then expect to pay about another US$10 more.
