Country Overview
Land of history and ancient ruins, art and architecture, Italy is also the land of la dolce vita, with fine cuisine, fine wine and a heady air of romance.
This old country has Roman ruins, medieval hill towns, and a city of God that is so fabulously rich it drips with gold. It also has a magnificent coastline with quaint villages clinging precariously to the cliff face, and blue Mediterranean waters.
Daily Budget
Italy is expensive and the bare minimum of EUR40 a day will see backpackers staying in hostels, self catering and keeping a vice grip on any other expenditure. For EUR100-150 a day it will be possible to enjoy a comfortable bed, sample Italian cuisine and visit museums and galleries.
When to Go!
Italy is entrancing in the spring months of April and May and delightful in the autumn months of October and November when the weather is pleasant and the scenery at its best. Colourful religious, cultural and historical events and happenings fill the Italian calendar, such as the flamboyant Easter processions in Taranto, Chieti and Sicily, and the pre-Easter Carnivale in Venice.
