Verona, the setting for Shakespeare's famous Romeo and Juliet, is the largest city of the mainland, Veneto. Strategically settled by the Romans it serves as the crossing between the major routes from Austria and Germany to central Italy. Verona is not as crowded as Venice but is a major tourist centre and there is much in evidence of it's long illustrious past. Roman antiquities are unsurpassed north of Rome.
