City Overview
Salima is a rural town / city (population of the district is 342 000), situated about 18 km from Lake Malawi, on the northern side. It used to be a big slave trading post and slaves were ferried over the lake to the Mozambique side. Not much to do in Salima - only shopping and banking.
Once you pass through Salima, you are destined for Senga Bay, a small tranquil town on the lake front. Beware of being over charged by the local matolas (public transport.) The ride should not cost you more than 100 - 150 Mk.
In Senga Bay itself, ask for the regsitered tour guides and make sure to firmly shake off the hordes who pose as tour guides, but are merely hawkers. There is a lot to do in Senga Bay, such as hikes, walking trails on the monkey / baboon routes, a visit to the croc farm, the tropical fish breeding farm. There is a host of accommodation to choose from as there are about 30 places on the lake front. NIce places to stay: Wamwai, Cool runnings, Carolinas. A paradise for water sport lovers - a new PADI diving school that overs Padi "discover scuba" sessions for only $20, boat trips, snorkeling, parasailing, water skiing. Food wise, try the local village shops for cheap but great food ( 50 - 650 Mk per plate) or the local restaurants such as Red Zebra. Livingstonia Beach Hotel is great to have a drink at and to relax at the pool. (they charge 500 MK for a day visitor to use their pool.)
