Off the Beaten Path
Kuching is the gateway to some of the best protected Rainforests in Malaysia.  1h travel from the city gets to:

Kubah NP for its vast and numerous trials and waterfalls,
Matang NP for rehabilated wildlife in particular Orangutans and it's trials which also connects to Kubah NP.
Semengoh NP for Orangutans
Bako NP Proboscis monkeys, silvir langurs, monitors and wild pigs, mangroves and pitcher plants
Fairy and Wind caves at Bau - bats & bird nests
Santubong mountain, good walk to summitRaflessia

Further out of town is Gunung Gading NP famed for its Raflessia and Tajung Datu NP which is the smallest park on the most western tip near the town of Sematan.

All NP's have basic accomodation and are worth a few nights to explore.
