City Overview
Amsterdam is a great place for a backpacker. Bicycles abound, the atmosphere is welcoming, and tree lined canals and beautiful old architecture makes it an elegant and charming city. For the young art student there are collections of art by the masters, Rembrandt van Rijn, and the tragic, tormented Vincent van Gogh, to name just two.
For students of life there are the brown cafes where cannabis is served openly, either in a deftly rolled joint, or as a wacky weed cookie. However, Amsterdam has a lot more to offer than walking around in cheerful bemusement, with history, an amazing Indonesian cuisine, and top class European film, drama, dance and music scene.
Daily Budget
Budgeting on meals at USD6-12 and accommodation at USD18 to 60, it is possible to scrape by on chips, hostels, and whole lot of footwork, but for an extra USD20, then a comfortable bed and decent meals become and option.
