Typhoons, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and floods, are all part of natures tantrums and she throws them constantly like a great spoiled brat in this part of the world. The people then add their own special touches to the islands with humongous garbage landslides and an intense military drive against Muslim insurgents. But, hey, nowhere is perfect.
Actually, having painted a picture of such dire danger that most travellers will run screaming from it, the truth is that most of the Philippines are essential laidback, relaxed, perfectly stable, and peopled by a friendly, cheerful folk who will go out of their way to make you welcome.

Generally, you could get by on cheap meals with other bottom-feeders at about US$2-3, and entry-level lodging at its cheapest, will hit you for about US$10-30. If all this sounds just too appalling for your sensitive soul, then consider US$3-5 for decent meals, and US$30-100 for accommodation that offers some comfort and style.

However, if, like the rest of the sane world, you would prefer to miss the typhoons it is best to visit the Philippines from September to May. January and May bring with them colourful festivals, and March and April is the time when the rice terraces are at their best. Mardi Gras, Filipino-style, known as Ati-Atihan comes to town in a three-day celebration in Kalibo during January.
