City Overview
Balancing on a gorge overlooking the Douro (from the Rio do Ouro (River of Gold)), the city is famous for its Port Wine and its river.
UNESCO has declared the vineyards of the magnificent Douro Valley through which the river runs a World Heritage Site. The whole Douro Region is filled with great natural beauty and history, and has been attracting visitors since time immemorial. So, if you want to get sloshed out of your bracket and drink in the wonders of nature at the same time, this is the place to be.
Daily Budget
If you are happy listening to the sound of guitars and songs wafting over the air as you sit at you campfire, preparing your own food, while happily camping under the stars then you should be able to make it on US$30 a day. If, however, you are thinking “Stuff that, I want comfort!” then look more in the region of US$45 – 50 a day for bed, breakfast and some entrance fees.
