Country Overview
Spanning eleven time zones and two continents Russia is the largest country on the planet. Forests filled with wildlife, rivers teeming with fish, soaring mountains and volcanoes, and the biggest freshwater lake in the world make up the vast never-ending landscape. Old venerable cities with ancient buildings, and the immeasurable cultural treasures held within are also part of this vast land, but certain areas should be avoided, as the people have not settled down yet after the enormous political upheavals in their lives. Sadly, crime and the full diorama of poverty and its results make it dangerous in Chechnya and Dagestan, North Ossetia, Stavropol, Karachayevo-Cherkessiya and Kabardino-Balkariya.

Daily Budget
Really cheap accommodation, frugal self catering, and plenty of self control will get you by on about US$30 a day, and US$85 a day will bring comfortable hotels and some decent restaurant food to the table.

When to Go!
The main holiday season falls between July and August, which is also the rainy season, and the warmest time of the year. Winter is bitingly cold but the Russians have learnt to adapt by inventing Vodka and drinking it in copious amounts, as well as making sure buildings are warm inside. The Russian Winter Festival is celebrated in St Petersburg, Moscow and Novgorod from late December to early January, all about folklore and of-course time for a few shots of life-giving Vodka. St Petersburg celebrates an international classical music festival, Music Spring over April and in May/June the Stars of the White Nights Festival is held at the Mariinsky Theatre.
