The city of Gold - eGoli - a friendly, colourful city. Johannesburg came to life when gold was discovered in 1886. By 1889 it was a large sprawling town with umpteen bars and gambling houses. Today Johannesburg is a large, sophisticated city and is the centre of South Africa's communications network. Easy access to all the major attractions of South Africa is simply possible from Johannesburg. There are some good places to see around this big city but the people make it such an interesting place. Crime is a problem, so keep all valuables out of sight.
