Negombo City Overview

Negombo lies on the northern side of Colombo in Srilanka. Negombo is an ideal tourist destination due to its closeness to the entrance of the port. It is a developing fishing port. One should know the History of Negombo before visiting it. Negombo used to be the region where the spice Cinnamon grew profusely. Thus the History of Negombo began with the spice. However at the present times the place is better known for its fishing industry and its seafood. The spice manufacturing industry has taken a back seat in Negombo. The environment of the city is bit old fashioned. One will find hustling streets all around the city. Some building bearing the mark of good architecture also attracts the attention of visitors. Tourists will get to see some churches having good ceiling paintings all around the city. These churches were created under the influence of the Portuguese people. History of Negombo states that the plantation and development of Cinnamon business was initiated by Moors. These Moors were expelled by the Portuguese in 16 th century. Again these Portuguese were defeated by the Dutch people in 1640 and they started re establishing the Cinnamon business. Before the British people took over Negombo in the year 1796, the Cinnamon business had already declined. It was the Karnavas who finally started adopting the fishing occupation. Thus fishing profession was initiated in Negombo. Eventually Negombo became the Chief fishing port in the island. History of Negombo involves an Old Dutch Fort. It lies close to the seashore. The gate way of the Fort has its year of construction inscribed on it. The Fort is now in the state of dilapidation. The Fort was first created in the year 1672. One can find a nice Dutch church just close to the ruins of the Fort. One can see other Old Dutch constructions in the city. One can also explore a Dutch canal by a bicycle. It will ensure a joyous ride for the tourists. Negombo can be considered to be a good holiday destination. It is close to Colombo. One can enjoy his cocktail sitting under the cool shades of the palm. Thus one can enjoy the beauty of the sun kissed sea while resting under the shade of tree in the beaches of Negombo
