Review from Peter Clewlow by Peter Clewlow
We visited Cambrinus in June 2007 mainly because their amazing beer list includes De Vlenteren-the best beer in the world! On entering we were bowled over by the retro styling with lots of fine wood and seating on different levels giving the place a warm and inviting feel. The beer list did not disappoint and we enjoyed some very special beers including the De Vlenteren helped along by some excellent food (I chose the 25euro menu-cheese fritters and salad followed by carbonnade flamande with apple sauce (mountain of fries) and creme brulee flavoured with abbey beer). The staff were very friendly and knew their beers. We spent a truly enjoyable 4 hours there and were reluctant to leave for our journey back into France where we were staying. We will definitely be back and I am hoping to re-visit before the end of the year; my friends and I will be making another tripnext summer as well. If in Bruges this place is a must!
If you're going to visit the Market, it's a shame not to stop by this place. It's only a couple blocks away and if you are from the States, the sheer quantity and quality of beers available is amazing.
The Cambrinus, at Philipstockstraat 19, only opened in late Feb 2006; its name means the King of Beers (no, not Bud) - the real King of Beers. The interior is modern and spacious and they serve 400 different beers (as advertised on the windows). The staff are pleasant, but don't expect them to have too much time to chat; they are busy serving food as well as drinks. It's not a place to go for a quick beer, as it will take you about 5-10 mins to read through the menu. It's different from De Garre and 't Bruges Beertje, but we think it's a must. Enjoy - we did.
