Review from James Brooks by James Brooks
been living in Rio since jast July. Quitea regular at this bar. it has a good atmosphere. the drinks may be little over priced. but still worth a shot
I read the comments with interest having lived in 11 countries I would say its very important for a tourist or even an expat to have at least one focal point for the international community.
Unfortunately, this place sucks. The local staff totally ignore the customers prefering to talk amongst themselves and swig drinks and play games with each other.Often I saw foreigners straggle in feeling a bit lost/lonely/depressed only to leave one hour later feeling even more lonely/lost/depressed.The owner seemed like a great chap and tries hard but he needs shot of his brazillian staff.
Bar staff apart from a corkman called douglas who dont work there anymore, are very stand-offish. I wouldnt waste my money in there when you get so much to offer in the other brazilian bars that have so much more to offer.
Just ok. Overpriced, and not much life. Ok to visit, but get out and see Rio - don't miss Lapa.
Probably still the best pub in Rio, but having visited the pub again recently, I do agree that it has gone downhill. It needs to be re-painted, seats re-covered, and in general, a good cleaning! The music was terrible, lots of heavy metal and an overdose of Alanis Morrisette and U2 (many tracks constantly repeating) through a very bad quality sound system, disappointing when the music used to be quite good, a nice eclectic mix. The sound was so bad many people didn't even notice.
The outside beer garden is nice, but you have to cross the street, and in my opinion defeats the purpose. Prices are on the high side, especially Guinness at almost US$8 per pint. When the bar is not properly air conditioned, like the Irish Pub, my expensive pints go warm very quickly! The service is slow, but the waitress was friendly. The food I ordered was greasy and overcooked, my friend was happy with his.
I hope the owners get their act together and clean it up. And hopefully, change the music, or mix it up a bit at least and invest in a new sound system! And A/C, too hot.
I've heard that one of the original Irish owners has left the business and that the bar has gone downhill since. I have some Brazilian friends from Rio who used to go there. Pity!
I have been to Rio 3 times in the last four years. We went to the Irish pub each time.On my last trip June 2005,we treated kinda shitty. We were sitting at the bar and the bartenders were too busy talking to their Brasilan friends(service SUCKED).When it was time to leave(2 hours before closing time),it took the cashier 1 HOUR before we finally got to leave. This was on an off season slow week night. This bar is for young locals and a few drunk tourists that don't have a better place to go.In Brasil go to Brasilan bars like club zero or Nietch or Rosies Irish pub in Leme is great. It has really nice NYC owner, great music, good food and you are treated really good. good luck!
Was in Rio for 2 weeks, great city and my nights always started at The Irish Pub, good craic. Special thaks to Armando, one of the owners, for showing me around.
I loved the Irish pub, it has a nice atmosphere, people are great and the music is awesome. I want to come back there for sure
Me and my friend went back every night, we loved the place.
Nice people and the ones working there was great.
It is nice to do as Romans do, get out and see Rio or where ever u are. But it is also nice to have a place like The Irish Pub to make you feel at home, maybe u will be tired of all Brazilian things and need to speak English, just to take a break for a night or catch up on football etc. But u will also meet many Brazilians there.
Went there just for a quick pint. The guiness was over priced so had a local. Much better. But why anybody who goes to Brazil, wants to go into an IRISH bar, is beyond me. When in Rome, do as the Romans. Get out, see Rio, its fantastic. Get as far away from westerners as possible. Its so much better.
I have been to some very good Irish bars around the world, this one is not the best one in the world but it is the best one in Rio, even though its small. It has more character than any other pub in Rio, I also like the decorations. It's owned by 2 Irish guys.
I went there and it was ok, however
I agree that The Irish Pub is a very good place to go with nice atmosphere. The music is good also.
This is the place for travellers that are looking for some irish athmosphere combined with a carioca friendship. Great beers, great food, great staff, located in the heart of Ipanema, in front of General Osório Square
