Review from John Gulka by John Gulka
I am the latest chump to fall victim to the New York pub drink scam in Athens. It was simply the barmaid and some guy who was supposedly the chef who fleeced me for 120 euros. I actually offered to buy the barmaid a drink when I first arrived. She kept asking for more and I was too polite to say no. I realised after 4 drinks on me, that I suspect was just water, I finally asked if they were trying to take advantage of my good nature, (stupidity). I was told I was paying for her company at which point I demanded my bill. 120 euros was the response. I reluctanly paid and left a much wiser albeit poorer sucker. Stay away.
Yes what a joke, this place is full of scum. I stopped in for a bit of peace and quiet and a cold beer. The barmaids hassled me non stop to buy them drinks. It got so annoying I left half my beer behind vowing never to stop in that bar again. They are relentless, it is a joke this place. Reading some of the comments, I am glad I only left half a beer behind.
Defintely to be avoided at all costs. I was approached in Syntygma Square by a man who said he owned a pub and he would like to shout for me seeing I had travelled so far. A beer was placed in front of me but then he disappeared and the barmaids arrived and did their thing. Too late to avoid an expensive bill and to find out later than my credit card had been altered as well!! All this took place on 7 August last.
definetely a place to avoid. The prices here are a joke. The barmaids are in on the act too. They try to get you to buy them drinks. I was asked repeatedly if I could buy them a drink. I refused, had one beer and left
Arriving in Athens, I was warned about a bar called the New York, I met so many people that said it was the biggest rip off and was one of those bars that arrange for a group to show up and milk you for your money. While I like to make up my own mind, I decided to check out the prices. Well I was not let down, a basic spirit was in excess off 10.00 Euros and it cost 5.00 Euros for a mini can of soft drink. I then asked for a glass of water (which was free) and left. This place is to be avoided at all costs, it is a thieves den. It is nestled roughly halfway between Monastriki and where the Palace is where the changing of the Guards takes place.
