Local Latinos that went a long way to nurture all the greatness of “El Barrio,” a.k.a. Spanish Harlem, own the place. I appreciated the rustic décor (exposed brick, lots of dark wood and corrugated metal), which is very old factory, even before learning that it was intentionally designed as a homage to the factory workers. The lively crowd reminded me of family gatherings. Once I got the menu I wanted to try EVERYTHING! Seeing things like Mofongo de Chorizo or something called a Jorge Platter (churrasco and grilled chicken with cheese sauce) made my discipline work overtime. I started with a pitcher of sangria that was to die for ($30/ $15 during Happy Hour). I then had an order Doña María’s Alcapurrias (yuca or guineo meat-filled fritters). A friend came by later, and after working himself through the crowd, ordered a monstrosity called a Barrio Burger. This was something out of the Flintstones, it was huge! When I grabbed a bite I couldn’t believe how delicious it was. I settled with a Chicken Wrap with Avocado, which fooled me into thinking I was behaving, although I couldn’t really forget the tasty alcapurrias. However, I left some room to sample their great selection of beers. From the wonderfully eclectic draft, I sampled their Guinness. These guys had experience working in Irish pubs before opening this place, so this stout was great. My friend had a Coney Island Lager, which was wonderful. Later, we sampled a couple of bottles. I was pleasantly surprised to find Quilmes of Argentina, so I had one. My friend went with a Xingu from Brazil. I have to say, we simply lost ourselves in here.
