Review from Curt Summers by Curt Summers
My wifes company had a cinco demayo party and had a beers of the world cooler. I happened upon this beer (Xingu) and could not believe what I just drank. I know it is not a stout like my once favorite beer Guiness but it was quite exhillirating and left a sweet taste in my mouth, like a kiss from a pretty girl. The next day I kept wondering where to get this beer and still have not found it. I am on a quest and I will not stop until I find it, and at that time I will buy at least 5 cases or whatever the store has. I can honestly say this has become my favorite beer. I am like a heroine addict looking for my next fix.
simply one of the best beers that has ever been in my mouth and i live in the PNW, home of more microbreweries than most places. i wonder if kevin henderson just got a bad bottle, i have never met anyone that has tried this beer and hated it that much.
Had this beer once in Indianapolis In. at the Ale Emporium. Worst tasting stuff i ever had and i comes in a larger than normal bottle. Bass and Guinness taste great compared to this beer. I remember the picture of the native and the alligator on the label. I believe to get this stuff they must have perforated the urinary and colon tract of the gator and let whatever leaked out fill the bottle.
Xingu - superb taste, superb look, and...I could swear...a superb effect. They say there's no real difference in how an alcoholic beverage makes you feel, but two bottles of Xingu (when it was available to me) always made me feel extraordinarily energetic and assertive, in a positive way, a way unlike any other beer or, for that matter, any otheralcoholic beverage. I don't really believe that can be true, but...it was.
Having drank my share of beer in the world, Xingu is one of the best tasting beers in the world. It is very smooth and does not have a bitter taste to it like most of the beers made in the USA. If you drink one you will defintely want to drink another. Supposedly Beergeeks.biz sells the beer and will ship it to you.
For you all in Atlanta, you can find Xingu beer at the Toco Hills package store on North Druid Hills Road. I'm sitting here having one. Another Brazilian classic is Brahma Shopp. Just talking about it makes me want to be back in Rio.
Delicious! For the guy who was looking for Xingu beer in Georgia, I had it the other night at My Cow's Cantina (formerly Billy Goat's) in the Oakhurst neighborhood of Atlanta. Haven't tried looking for it retail yet, though.
As a 57 year old American who searched for years to find a beer worth drinking, I stumbled onto Xingu and fell immediately, wonderously, and totally in love with this beer. Unfortunately, all local Georgia retailers that carried Xingu kind of dropped the ball 8-10 years ago and I had to buy what I could at Applejacks in Denver until they too stopped carrying it. If you can find this beer and it is your time to ascend, I suggest you pour the black beer and prepare to be bewitched.
Please visit www.amazonbeer.com for more info on Xingu Black Beer.
Anne L., where can I find more info or literature on Xingu? Maybe some reputable sources. It seems very elusive, but I have had it here, and think its wonderful. I am actually taking a class called Chemistry of Beer, a special topics class for chem majors, and would like to know much much more about Xingu. I saw you post your comment just last month, so hopefully you'll see this =) My email is: trentdk AT gmail DOT com
I started this brand in 1986- and can speak with some authority the subject - Xingu Beer is black from the dark roasted malt that is used. It is a true black lager style not an ale- so it will not taste like a stout. In contrat to the dark color the beer is surprisingly light in taste -very smooth with a bittersweet finish. The name was not chosen haphazardly - I decided on the name Xingu to bring attention to the indiginous people of the Amazon regions, specifically the Xingu River area -where women have brewed fermented beverages - from manioc root and other local ingredients for thousands of years. I consider this beer a tribute to their culture and history. I also was interested in resurrecting a lost style of beer from Brazilian culture- cerveja preta was nearly extinct when I travelled to Brazil in 1986 - we found a newly renovated micro brewery in Santa Catarina to produce this style for export. Nearly 20 years later - Xingu is sold in Brazil and the US and is a popular alternative to pale lagers. I welcome any questions or comments about the beer. It is truly unique in flavor -and I also recommend that it be tried -at least twice...
OOPS! "The reason why it is black in colour is because of the River Negro near Manaus which is also black in colour",,Mr Charles Lawson said". He couldn't be wronger. Xingu beer is brewed thousands of miles away from Manaus, in the Southerner State of Santa Catarina, and the beer's recipe has nothing to do with Amazon forrest culture. They simply chose a name, it could be Rio, Brasilia or Bahia, but they preferred... Xingu. Simple like that. The beer is GREAT!
The reason why it is black in colour is because of the River Negro near Manaus which is also black in colour.
This beer is a black beer not a stout, it doesn't have the bark taste that a lot of stouts have and it is a flavourful, not too heavy flavor. It is in its own class. Very unique, would recommend people to try it at least once.
the beer was black in color but had a nice full flavor with only a little bitterness.
