Aix les Bains Travel Guide for backpackers

Gentle and humble are the two words that come to mind when thinking of Aix-les-Bains, Having once been the spa of choice for people such as Queen Victoria, it has now become more sedated. These days it is frequented more often than not by the pensioners, for thermal treatment. Mt Revard looms over the city, followed by a vast area of meadows and forests. It is also home to Frances largest natural lake - Lac Du Bourget.

DAILY BUDGET in AIX LES BAINS - Well as we all know by now, should you try your hand at camping and make all your own meals then surviving on minimal monies is easy but if you prefer to sleep in a room and have someone make your meals for you then you should budget on spending about US$ 60 per day. Accommodation will set you back US9-37 per day and food in the region of US$6-16 per meal.

Abbaye d'Hautecombe - this is the place to visit if you are at all spiritual, built by monks in the 1100’s, and then revamped again in the 19th century. Situated on the edge of Lac Du Bourget, it is truly the most perfect place to go and worship or meditate. The daily mass is held at noon every day. Pilgrims are more than welcome to go worship.

Musee Faure - Having been given the label of being the most interesting museum in the city, it houses sculptures by Rodin and works by Degas, Corot, and Cezanne. A must if you are an art lover.

Thermes Nationaux d'Aix-les-Bains - These bathes date back to 1857 and then renovated again in 1972. One can actually still bath in them. Before entering the spa, you have the option of visiting the thermal caves. Even if you are not interested in history, it is still a cool spot to relax and chill out in.
