Angkor Travel Guide for backpackers

Siem Reap serves as the base for Angkor Wat. A place is certainly the most famous attraction in Cambodia; it is located only 6km from the old market in Siem Reap. Many of the temples and best viewed at different times of the day due to their geographical orientation and the angle of the sun.

DAILY BUDGET in ANGKOR - Currency: Riel Meals - Budget between $2 - $4 . Lodging - Budget $2 - $8 a For the most part, Angkor a is a pretty cheap place to travel. Rock-bottom budgeters can probably get by on about $10 a day. If you want to travel around you'll need to spend more - transport is a major expense. Entrance fees (particularly for Angkor Wat - around US$20 a day) can also set you back a fair bit. Mid-range travel is very reasonable, with excellent accommodation from US$15-25 and good meals for around US$5.

Angkor Wat - There are over 100 temples in Angkor Wat all built of only granite, sandstone and wood (the wood has long since decayed of course) between the 9th and 14th centuries. The main temples can be seen in about a day - many people find that several days is a good amount of time to be able to visit the main temples as well as some of the other smaller less visited temples.

The Land Mine Museum - is well worth visiting - it is sobering, sad and educational at the same time. It is located not far from Charles De Gaulle Blvd.

The Angkor Zoo - is located off a dirt road (on the way to Angkor its just past the ticket gates) off of Charles De Gaulle Blvd. Its a fairly small zoo with a great variety of birds and reptiles - over 100 species of animals are represented. The highlight are the bears and the cheetahs. Price of admission is $3 per person.
