DAILY BUDGET in AUCKLAND - Backpackers can make it in New Zealand if they stay in hostels or camp, and in Auckland there Food halls that provide economical but nourishing meals. Budget on US$5-10 for meals, and : US$10-20 for lodging. |

Auckland Museum - For a $5 donation the Auckland Museum offers three floors of displays and exhibitions including some of the world's finest collections of Maori and Pacific art, and you get to enjoy the singing and dancing of the Manaia cultural performance if you have $15 spare.
Otara Market - Located in South Auckland, the site of ‘Once Were Warriors' , and although in the city's poorest sector, Saturday mornings bring what is the world's biggest Maori and Polynesian market renowned for it's excellent but cheap traditional food and Maori carvings.
Karangahape Road - Known as K'Road by all and sundry, this street is a fascinating blend of hip cafes, music shops, and outlets selling cheap designer clothes at its eastern end, and massage parlours, gay cruising clubs, and strip shows giving its western end a rather notorious reputation.

Zarbo - Located at 24 Morrow St, this great deli cafe serves a mind blowing range of dishes made from products from around the world, and offers great breakfasts or lunches at $5 to $15.
Tanuki - Located at 319b Queen St, Tanuki has been decorated to give the feeling of sitting in a cave, and sells delicacies on skewers for about $2.50 for two, or seven for $10.
Mecca - Located at 61 Davis Crescent, this is a café with a relaxed vibe that serves curries and munchies like Blueberry pancakes with fresh fruit, ranging from $9 to $12.

Roots - Located at 322 K' Rd, this is the hangout for Reggae, Cuban and African beat and DJ's mixing and spinning ‘til late.
Papa Jack's Voodoo Lounge - Located at 9 Vulcan Lane, the vibe at Papa Jack's is kicking over weekends with DJ's mixing dance and alternative rock, and the occasional top Kiwi band pulling in.
Kiwi Tavern - Located at 3 Britomart Place, where you can join the rest of the backpacking crowd playing pool, having a quiet drink, or taking full advantage of Tuesdays with the five beers for $8 "Drink your way around NZ” offer.
