This tiny country is a delightful scene of art, architecture, and some of the most delectable food in the world. It is crammed with history and its people are friendly and welcoming, with a strong sense of family. Apart from the glorious buildings and impressive heritage cities, it has valleys, rivers, and great forests to explore. It is also a country that celebrates life with innumerable festivals, religious processions, and classical music extravaganzas; in short, it is a great country to visit.

Antwerp Bruges Brussels Ghent

Brussels - Home of the Grand Place, this magnificent monument to opulence and luxury has a imposing Gothic town hall, baroque guildhalls and a collection of pavement cafés and cosy little restaurants.

Antwerp - In Antwerp the old city developed around the country's most imposing cathedral, with cobblestone lanes and charming squares, it was also home to Rubens, and his work can be seen all the city’s museums and churches.

Bruges - Some of Austria’s finest art collections can be found in Bruges, as well as Europe’s most well preserved medieval city.

The Ardennes - In Belgium’s most southeastern corner, away from the hordes of rubber-necking tourists are forests and valleys that hide peaceful little villages and beautiful rivers.

Ghent - The capital of the Flanders province, Ghent has a considerable student population bringing some light relief to its ancient streets, and some awe inspiring pieces of medieval architecture, as well as one of the earliest known oil paintings of the world.

DAILY BUDGET in BELGIUM - Traveling costs are the least of the backpacker’s worries, as Belgium is not the biggest country in the world, but their food definitely is mind and budget blowing, and cheap hotels are far and few, and heavily booked. Therefore if aiming at the most modest of meals consider spending US$7-10, and lodging about US$20-50, with an overall daily expenditure of approximately US$50 per day.

April through to September is the warmest time of the year, but Belgium is always somewhat soggy, with grey skies and rain, so come prepared.

The Ommegang pageant is presented in July, when nobles in historic costumes parade the streets of Brussels in a grand display, and throughout the year there are festivals and fairs, with July 21, Belgium’s national day, being the start of the month long Brussels Fair.
