Bergen Travel Guide for backpackers


Founded in 1070 Bergen is Norways second largest city . Set on a peninsula surrounded by seven hills it's the gateway to the spectacular Western Fjords. Bergens history is closely tied to the sea, it became one of the ports of the Hanseatic League of Merchants which dominated trade in Northern Europe in the late Middle Ages. A university town and the cultural centre of western Norway it has a pleasant, laid back, pace and is one of the country's most enjoyable cities.  

DAILY BUDGET in BERGEN - Norway can be very expensive but if you stay on camping sites and prepare your own meals you might just get by on 180 a day. If you plan to stay at hostels, breakfast at a cafe, lunch at a cheap restaurant and shop at grocery stores and cook your own meals at night you should manage on 300 a day. These are the bare costs and don't include drinks, travelling, trips or drinks of any sort.

The Floibanen - Ovregaten. The Floibanen is a quaint funicular railway which run's to the top of Mount Floyen where you can take in the panoramic views of the city.

Bryggen - This is a World Heritage protected site and the home of the old medieval quarter. The streets are full of long timber buildings that are home to museums, restaurants and shops and are easily explored on foot. Take a look at the alleys that run alongside the back of the restored buildings and you will see the stacked stone foundations and rough plank constructions of centuries past.

Bryggens Museum - Dregsalmenning 3. this was built on the site of Bergens earliest settlement. The 800 year-old foundations unearthed during the construction have been incorporated into the museum's exhibits along with rune stones, pottery, human skulls and domestic implements.

Bergen Chinese Restaurant - Lodin Lepps Gate 2B. This popular hangout for the locals is as much a cafe as a restaurant. Make friends with the other customers while sitting on the long benches.

Haugesund - Bestastua Mat Pris. A reasonably priced large restaurant in an atmospheric old building in the town centre. Go here if you want a taste of well cooked traditional Norwegian food.

Vangen Cafe - Vansagate 42. Come here for delicious, sinful cakes, snacks and main meals.

Cafe Opera - Engen 24. Situated in a white wooden buiding and popular with local trendsetters, the snacks, beer and coffee here are excellent.

Bryggen Tracteursted - Bryggen . If you want to let your hair down try this raucous, down to earth bar in one of the old wooden merchants buildings on the Bryggen. Live music is played here on Fridays and Saturdays.

Sjeboden - Bryggen. Sited in an old timber building, this atmospheric, lively bar often has live music.
