Berlin Travel Guide for backpackers

Lose your preconceived notions of Berlin and checkpoint Charlie, imagine a city of grand public buildings, sophisticated restaurants, and pumping nightlife… this is Berlin in the 21st century. Without doubt and no denying it there is another side to this historic city, a side of grey sadness and poverty in the east that highlights the glitz and 'decadence' of the western side.

Spend time enjoying the nightclubs, museums, theatres and parks, forests and lakes around Berlin and you will find much that is worth checking out.

DAILY BUDGET in BERLIN - If you watch your spending closely and stay in the cheapest accommodation, do some self catering or make use of stand up eateries it is just possible to come out on about US$ 50-60 and day, but for somewhat more comfortable stay consider spending in the region of US$100.

Countryside - Explore the surrounding countryside on foot or by bicycle, picnic in the parks, or enjoy the lakes for easy going fun and relaxation.

Brandenburger Tor - Check out the world famous Brandenburg Gate, which was ironically designed and built as a symbol of peace in 1791.

Museums - Berlin is home to some of the finest and most comprehensive museums in the world, and although to some the mention of 'museum' conjures up 'BORING' check out some of these and be surprised, very surprised.

Berlin Free Tour - New Berlin Tours offers a free walking tour twice a day (11am and 1pm) for visitors to Germany's capital city. The tour lasts 3.5 hours, and starts at the Brandenburg Gate (S-bahn Unter den Linden) www.newberlintours.com
