Bern Travel Guide for backpackers

One of the most beautiful cities in the world dating back to the 12th Century. In 1983 the United Nations declared it a World Cultural Landmark. Over the past few years contemporary-style homes and structures have been discreetly added to the historic environment. Tuesdays and Saturday are market days. People come into town to sell their produce and wares and a festive atmosphere permeates the city which has the feel of a large provincial town rather than a city.

DAILY BUDGET in BERN - Switzerland is not by any means cheap. If you are prepared to spend to have a really great time budget on around US$51 for good accommodation, great food, attractions and transport.

There is so much to see and take in just by walking around the city, crossing the many bridges and visiting the town’s major squares.

At the Theaterplatz is the famed Zytgloggeturm (Clock Tower), Komhausplatz with the Ogre Fountain and Rothausplatz, on which stands the Town Hall.

Visit the Markgasse, filled with luxury shops and 17th/18th Century houses.

You might like to try the pork sausages, onion sauce and rosti, beef Stroganoff with noodles or rice or any of the wok dishes. This menu just goes on and on.

Della Casa Review - Schauplatzgasse 16 - Put your tastebuds to the test by savouring the authentic dish comprising boiled veal head with onion, potatoes, tomatoes and herbed vinaigrette. A bit pricey but satisfying.

Dampfzentrale - Marzilistrasse 47 - Caf/bar serving reasonably priced local fare and pizza.

If this is all too much buy some fresh bread on market days from the country folk, fresh fruit and veg with a variety of local sausages and pickled meats and eat it on the banks of the river.

Samurai Club - Aarbergergrasse 35 - This upmarket gay club with hot music and bods, is worth checking out.

ISC - Neubruckstrasse 10 - Premier student venue and club. Loud, busy and buzzing.
