| Braga Travel Guide for backpackers |

| The tourist office here claims it is Portugal's answer to Rome. It is still Portugal's religious capital with great torchlit processions and weirdly hooded penitents at Easter time. You can't miss the Archbishops Palace, like a great fortress bang slap in the middle of town. It's got lively pedestrian walkways and fairy-tale plazas which make it feel like a miniature Lisbon. There's great cafes, bars, and restaurants so you can't miss this place out on a visit to Portugal. |

 |
DAILY BUDGET in BRAGA - With about US$30 to US$40 you should get by with nosh, accommodation and various attractions which you might care to visit. |
 |
Antigo Paco Episcopal - in the centre of town; it was the Archbishop's Palace but now houses the library and town archives. It's got wonderful facades dating back to the 14th., 17th., and 18th., centuries. If you are into architecture, this is the perfect place to breathe it in.
Igreja Do Bom Jesus - it's well worth a visit; it's about half an hour's walk from town and you can get a super ride on the funicular railway here. As you go up you pass some amazing things, like the Staircase of the Five Senses, loads of statues, symbols, and inscriptions, and the Chapel of Simon the Cyrenian. It's well worth spending a day here; you can get refreshment once on top.
Cathedral - Portugal's oldest, right in the centre of town. It's got loads of old paintings and relics. There's the original iron cross which was on the ship that discovered Brazil in 1500, strange though, there's also some brain boxes containing - not brainy people but brainy people's brains from long ago. Creepy!
|

Churrasquiera du Se - found on R. Dom Paio Mendez, 25. It's cathedral BBQ has great pork chops, BBQ chicken, veal, and super omelettes. There's also a super-cheap prato dodia.
Brasileria Cafe - on the corner of R. Sousa and sao Marcos. It's great for lunch, serving coffee, sarnies, and beer. A good place to people-watch and it's open until midnight.
Cafe Vianna - Pr. Republica, 87, found behind the fountain. It's a bit snappy, but at night it's a popular hangout, sometimes with live music. You can get a great breakfast, lunch, and dinner all at a very reasonable price.
|

Cafe Vianna - Pr. Republica, 87. Go upstairs here and find a 2-floor bar; it's chic and the music is great. Open all evenings during the week but on Friday and Saturday it's open from 2200 hours until 0600 hours.
Club 84 - found in Pr. Joao XX1. Great dancing and beers to while away the night and early hours.
Hotel Tourismo - on Avda da Liberdade; beneath the hotel is the Locomotive Club, hugely popular and definitely the place to be in. Open 'till the early hours.
