Cadiz Travel Guide for backpackers

Cadiz is one of Europes oldest inhabited cities, founded about 1100 BC by the Phoenicians it has been one of Spains principal ports ever since. With it's grand open squares, narrow alleyways and 18th century houses it has a tremendous atmosphere, slightly seedy and rather mysterious.

The city is legendary for its Carnaval festivities in February/March and attracts visitors year round for its excellent weather and golden pebble-strewn beaches.

DAILY BUDGET in CADIZ - If you stay at a youth hostel and buy your food from street vendor's and fish and chip shop's you can manage on $50 - $60. Staying in private room's or hotel's and eating out once a day would mean a daily budget of $60 - $70.

Carnaval - in February/March this fiesta is one of the best in Spain and is famous for it's heady atmosphere and outrageous exuberance, which is said to rival that of Rio de Janeiro.

Museum de Cadiz, Plaza de Mina - houses a magnificent collection of archaeological remains and a fine art collection.EU citizens get in free so remember to take your passport when you visit.

The Cathedral - in the old town, is well worth a visit as it is considered to be the last great cathedral built by colonial riches. With it's golden dome it is the city's most striking landmark.
