Canary Islands Travel Guide for backpackers

The Canary Islands are situated just off the northwest coast of Africa and with their fabulous sunshine record they provide sun and fun holidays all the year round. But if you can tear yourself away from the large resorts with their sundrenched beaches you can find volcanic landscapes, sub-tropical forests, Sahara like sand dunes, and soaring mountains.

Whether you want to party in the heat, chill out or try a spot of mountain climbing, these islands have it all.

DAILY BUDGET in CANARY ISLANDS - Budget travellers could manage on $40-$50 if they shared rooms at the cheapest hotels and apartments, ate at fast food joints or made their own from choices found in the local supermarkets.

U$ 60- 100 would allow you to have more comfortable accommodation and really party.

Fiesta - like their Spanish cousins the Canarians love a good time and fiestas are held all year round. February/ March is the wildest time and brings several weeks of parades, fancy dress and parties across the islands. The Santa Cruz in Tenerife fiesta rivals the Rio de Janeira Carnival in it's exuberance.

Art festivals - if your tastes are more arty try the Gran Canaria and Las Palmas arts festivals which are held throughout the year. There is even a film festival held every two years in February/March.

Volcanoes - in Lanzarote and Tenerife have created some amazing lunar landscapes which are a must to see. Try the climb up Mount Teide in Tenerife, it's challenging but well worth the effort. If this does not appeal there is a funicular railway which transports you most of the way. A word of caution, whichever way you choose take a jumper, it's cold up there even on the hottest days.
Add your favourite free attraction!

Cheap Cafes - There are numerous cheap cafes serving 'English breakfasts', burgers etc in all the tourist resorts.

El Diablo - Montanas Del Fuego, Lanzarote. This restaurant is actually on top of the volcano in Lanzarote and all the food is done on a grill over the live volcano. The views over the Mountains of Fire are awesome.

El Novillo Precox - Las Palmas, Gran Canaria. Try their enormous portions of South American style barbecued meat.

El Dornajo - In Playa De Las Americas, Tenerife. Food here is good and the helpings are generous.
Add your favourite cheap eat!

Bodegon Tamanca - Located in San Nicolas on La Palma. This is a rustic cave bar with a warm atmosphere where the locals hang out.

El Bote - In Los Cristianos, Tenerife. This tiny boat shaped bar is just behind the harbour promenade. If you are hungry try the Tapas, they are the best in the area.

Chic/Cream - In Playa Des Ingles, Gran Canaria - Caters for the 18 to 30 scene, dance music is pumped out at full volume. Crazy atmosphere.
