Cape Town Travel Guide for backpackers

Known for its amazing beauty and laid back people, Cape Town is many things to many people, but for fun and low cost entertainment it is the coolest place for the younger set. Here the sparkling ocean costs nothing to enjoy, the mountain offers incredible hiking and climbing, and there is a waterfront where people-watching is a national pastime, absorbing, entertaining and coming at the cost of a burger.

DAILY BUDGET in CAPE TOWN - It is possible, with a lot of juggling and high finance to get by on US$10 a day in South Africa, and that includes camping or staying in hostels, and self catering, with meals coming at around US$5-10, and lodging in the region of US$7-25.

The City Bowl - Take a stroll around the City Bowl and take in the history of the Cape of Good Hope with a visit to the 350 year old stone-walled Castle, and the Grande Parade, where once people were executed, but today is the home of a market, and check out the colony of seals resting on a landing near the Clock Tower.

The Waterfront - Located on Cape Town's working harbour The V&A Waterfront is the source of cheap food, free entertainment in the form of traditional dancing, or new bands looking for exposure, and the site of a great flea market.

Blouberg - Just a twenty minute drive from Cape Town city centre and the perfect spot for flying kites, windsurfing, and the views of Table Mountain that feature on postcards.

Caffe Balducci - Located at Quay 6, V&A Waterfront, this smart coffeeshop cum restaurant offers great steak rolls in peri-peri sauce along with other foods that smack of South Africa and come cheaply priced. The views are great too.

Vasco da Gama Tavern - Located on 3 Alfred St, this very popular place is great for inexpensive seafood, loud TV, and down to earth atmosphere.

Food Stalls - Stalls selling various types of foods, from hot-dogs to samoosa's are dotted around the V&A waterfront and the Blue Shed fleamarket.

Ocean Basket - A very popular chain of seafood restaurants in South Africa, Ocean Basket promises - and delivers - delicious, fresh seafood and unbelievable value for money!

The Purple Turtle - Located on the corner of Shortmarket and Long streets, in the City Centre, this is where the metalheads and Goths hang out. Open until late, and on Saturdays live music strictly for the brave of heart.

Chilli'n'Lime - Located at 23 Somerset Rd, De Waterkant, this slick 'n sleek club has two dance floors and four bars attracting the twenties ‘n up age group with hip hop and house parties.

Jo'burg - Located at 218 Long St, City Centre, funky and hip, "Jo'burg" attracts the young arty crowd with offerings of live music on Saturday nights.

Springboks - Situated next to newlands rugby stadium. Pumps on friday nights attracting many an inebriated client. Good to meet the Southern Suburbs crowd.
