Chamonix Travel Guide for backpackers


The bustling, cosmopolitan Chamonix is set against the stunning backdrop of glaring snowfields, eerie green glaciers and ridges of shark-toothed aiguilles surrounding Mont Blanc.  

DAILY BUDGET in CHAMONIX - Hostel and cheap hotel accommodation can range from $10 to $35 per night, including bedding and one should budget $5 to $15 for meals from cheap restaurants and markets. Student discounts are common and a 10% to 15% service charge is levied onall accommodation and food restaurant bills, so tipping is at your discretion

Vallee Blanche - A beautiful ski area in the Chamonix Valley where one can also go picnicking,walking or mountaineering

Mont Blanc - A towering mountain range on the Italian border, the highest peak of which measures nearly 16,000 feet, making it the second highest mountain in Europe.

Montenvers Railway - This train takes visitors on the short ride between Chamonix and the Mer de Glace glacier

Chez Valerio - 88 rue du Lyret. The finest authentic Italian cuisine with a menu offering over 40 pizzas cooked on a wood-burning stove.

The Jekyll - 71 route Pelerins. The Jekyll has a warm and welcoming atmosphere in traditional Irish style, and is always busy. The pub is famous for its excellent, homemade food - imaginative dishes are skillfully prepared and served in generous portions. Don't miss the Apres-ski.

Le Munchie - 87 Rue des Moulins. The Munchie has become one of the valley's most popular restaurants. New school food, with the flavours of Asia in a classic dish. friendly and young atmosphere, there is always a new paintings exposition.

The Cantina - 37 Impasse des Rhodoendrons. The Bar is "the" stopping point for everyone and anyone that wants to really experience the night life.

Cybar - 80 rue des Moulins. An internet cafe where we haven't forgotten the meaning of the words cafe or bar. A perfect meeting point & après-ski venue - and to check up on your e-mails, of course!
