Chengdu Travel Guide for backpackers

Centrally located in the western Sichuan Plain, Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province, is renowned for its fertile land and agricultural wealth which have earned the city the nickname "Storehouse of Heaven". Indeed, it is a beautiful city full of vigor and vitality.

DAILY BUDGET in CHENGDU - Currency: Renminbi ('People's Money') Meals - can be kept to around $1 - $2 a meal. Accommodation should be budgeted for about $25 - $35 a day. Food is cheap throughout China. The bottom line is that you'll be charged the 'tourist price' a lot of the time - it's a practice encouraged by the government. Tipping is not really expected in mainland China - but bargaining is definitely OK. You can bargain in shops, street stalls, and hotels - but not in large stores

Mt. Qingcheng - famous for its beautiful scenery and numerous cultural and historic sites, as well as being noted for its paradisiacal scenery, which is primitive and brilliant, gorgeous and mysterious. Entrance $5.70.

Thatched Cottage of Du Fu - located on the side of the Flower Washing Brook in the western suburbs of Chengdu. It is the former residence of the celebrated Tang dynasty poet, Du Fu. Entrance $3.60.

Wenshu Monastery - a Buddhist monastery dedicated to the God of Wisdom (Wenshu), It is the largest and best-preserved Buddhist place of worship in Chengdu. Entrance $1.80

Out in the streets - Muslims grill chilli and coriander coated kebabs over open coals, peddlers trundle around selling steamed buns, noodles and spicy tofu.

Alfresco hotpot stalls - At night, the kerbsides are thick with these. You'll find the best of these setting up around dusk in a side-street east off Kehua Bei Lu , near Xinnanmen bus station.

Carol's Diner - Linjiang Lu (along the river west of the Jiaotong and Xinnanmen). Part of a smart chain serving good Mexican and Italian fare (fine pizzas), burgers and coffee in comfortable surroundings.

Bars & Clubs - Chengdu's after-dark entertainment is growing, but venues open and close very rapidly. Check in the cafes for the latest hotspots.

Shamrock - Draught Guinness in central China! Pizza is great, 'blow-your-head-off' cocktails, friendly staff. They even let me play footy (soccer) on Sunday. Not a cutting edge club, but v. relaxed hang out. Free pool!

Shamrock - Travelling around China, enjoyed Shamrock recommended by your site. their adress is 15 Ren MIn Nan Lu, section 4 chengdu. TEL: 028-8523 6158. They have a cool website, check it out: www.shamrockinchengdu.com
