| Chennai Travel Guide for backpackers |

This is India's fourth largest city and is the capital of Tamil Nadu state. Chennai is basically a conglomerate of overgrown villages and it can be divided into two main parts. The older section, George Town, is near the dock area northeast of Periyar EVR High Road. The streets are narrow, there are some cheaper hotels, restaurants and bazaars.
The other section of the city is south of the Periyar EVR High Road. Here you'll find theatres, banks, bookshops, craft centres, consulates, tourist offices and top-range hotels and restaurants.

DAILY BUDGET in CHENNAI - A backpacker staying here can manage on about US$30 which will see them through 3 meals and accommodation. If you stay in slightly more pricey hotels then expect to pay about another US$10 more. |
 |
Guindy National Park - located on the southern outskirts of Chennai, it's so big that spotting wildlife can be difficult. However, it's the only place on the planet where it is still possible to see herds of Indian antelope. There's also spotted deer, civet cats, jackals, mongoose, and various types of monkeys. There is also a snake park which is well worth a visit if you like them!
San Thome Cathedral - built in 1504, then rebuilt in 1893. It's a Roman Catholic church supposed to contain the remains of St. Thomas the Apostle. It's near Kapaleesha Temple, at the southern end of Kamarayar Salai, close to the seafront.
Government Museum - you will find this on Pantheon Road, between Edgemore and Anna Salai. It's got a great archaeological section with items from all over southern Indian periods. There's also a bronze gallery next door , well worth a visit.

Maharajah Restaurant - located around the corner Broadlands on Triplicane Road. Nearly all back packers come here to eat the varied veggie nosh including toasted sandwiches, lassis, lunchtime thalis and snacks right up to midnight.
Dasaprakash Restaurant - found at No. 806 Anna Solai. It's quite a posh place, serving veggie nosh, including fresh salads. The ice-creams here are fab.
Shaanti Restaurant - is located in the Pantheon Hotel in Kennet Lane. It serves great south Indian, tandoori, Chinese and Continental grub; it really is a great place to eat in.

Chola Bar - you'll find this in Binny Road just off Anna Salai. Beers here are served in gleaming tankards and you get a mouthwatering platter of snacks - if you polish all of these off you can forget about dinner!
Sherrys - Located at the Imperial Hotel in Gandhi Irwin Road. Very popular place and you get a lively bunch of locals who swap stories and jokes day and night. The bar (oops sorry, the permit room) does not resemble purgatory!
Sindoori Hotel - you will find this in Greams Lane. You can get a great Saturday night bash with loads of disco and dancing and you can get a beer here too.
