Cherbourg Travel Guide for backpackers


Cherbourg is the gateway to Normandy. It lies on the Cotentin Peninsula which covers an area of about 18 miles and has a variety of landscapes. It has a spectacular coastline and plenty of safe, sandy beaches The port’s attractions include a fabulous aquarium and memorials to the dead of WWII. The countryside of the Val de Saire area, east of Cherbourg, and the Hague peninsula, to the west, also have much to offer.  

DAILY BUDGET in CHERBOURG - Hostel and cheap hotel accommodation can range from $10 to $35 per night, including bedding and one should budget $5 to $15 for meals from cheap restaurants and markets. Student discounts are common and a 10% to 15% service charge is levied onall accommodation and food restaurant bills, so tipping is at your discretion

Liberation Museum - Fort du Roule. This museum examines the significance of the Battle of Normandy.

La Cite de la Mer - This vast aquarium is in a converted liner terminal that also contains a decommissioned nuclear submarine that can be toured.

Ludiver Observatory and Planetarium - Those with an interest in astronomy will be thrilled with their "virtual guide," Galileo Galilei

Le Faitout - 25 rue Tour-Carree. Shopping-district restaurant that offers traditional French cuisine at very reasonable prices; a bowl of mussels can cost under $7.20, and there's a daily special for $11.40. Most dishes are a la carte, at around $11.00 - $13.20. Closed Sun, & Mon lunchtime.

Cafe du Theatre - 8 place de Gaulle tel 02.33.43.01.49. Attractive setup adjoining the theatre, with a cafe behind plate-glass windows on the ground floor and a full-scale brasserie upstairs, arranged on three sides of the central opening. The varied menus, from $15.00, hold more than just seafood. Closed Sun.

Vauban - 22 quai de Caligny. Warm, friendly, and family-owned, this spot is headed up by chef Daniel Imbert, who prefers to approach his cuisine with a light, modern touch, avoiding the cream that typifies classic Norman fare. The menu is seasonal, with set menus running from $16.00 and lots of fish and seafood temptations. Closed Mon., 2 wks Feb., 2 wks Nov. No dinner Sun.

Barfleur - Just a few miles east of Cherbourg, on a rocky promontory, is the delightful fishing harbour and village of Barfleur. It’s a pleasant spot in which to have a coffee or a glass of wine.
