Christ Church Travel Guide for backpackers


The English Garden City of New Zealand is graced with beautiful parklands, gracious old stone buildings and tree lined riversides. The rivers channel around the city and provide great opportunities for rafting and jet-boating. There are museums and galleries and the locals enjoy theatre and are ardent supporters of classical music. Nightlife includes the Casino and you may encounter the Wizard in the city square.  

DAILY BUDGET in CHRIST CHURCH - Careful budgeting will make USD50 a day a scrape, an extra USD10 makes a difference.

Sumner Beach – with Shag Rock at one end, is a popular recreation area. When the tide is out one can walk to Cave Rock and along the Esplanade.

Canterbury Museum – Showcases natural science and a marvelous Moari Moa gallery. The museum is open daily and there is no entrance fee.

Avon River & Botanical Gardens – Open seven days a week, boating and punting on the river is a relaxing pastime and the tranquil beauty of the gardens is a tonic.

Cyber Pass Cafe – Chancery Lane – buy a cup of coffee or hot chocolate and you get 15 minutes free on the Internet. You can eat at this comfortable, friendly cafe as well.

Club Bazaar Pizzeria – Wakefields Ave – Known for making the best pizza in New Zealand! Pasta dishes and Mexican food to eat in or take away is also on the menu.

Cellini’s – Nayland Street – Friendly, efficient service makes this lively place a winner. The quiches and pastas and pita bread is great.

Chambers Bar – Manchester Street – Happy hours are from 5pm to 7pm and they are open 7 days a week. Live music starts from 7.30pm at this easy-going place.

Sammy’s Jazz Review – Bedford Row – This lively nightspot is hot with the locals and the live jazz is great.

Southern Blues Bar – Madras Street –With live music 7 days a week, this groovy blues bar with cool vibes is a popular dive.
