| Cologne Travel Guide for backpackers |

| Cologne is the largest city in the Rhineland. This city was devastated during the World War II bombings, but with the reconstruction of Cologne, a history that had lain buried for centuries was brought to light. There was evidence that Cologne had been important and powerful during the early Christian era as well as during the Roman times and the Middle Ages. Cologne is a stylish attractive city located right on the Rhine and has internationally renowned museums, attractive shops modern architecture, which contrasts greatly with the old historical buildings and has excellent beer. |

DAILY BUDGET in COLOGNE - You are looking at between $56 and $170 for accommodation, and meals between $6 and $33 depending on what you want to eat. |
Gothic Cathedral (Dom) – This is Germany’s biggest Cathedral and it took over 600 years to complete and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. This majestic structure is one of the world’s great cathedrals and is the spiritual and geographical heat of Cologne.
The Wallraf-Richartz-Museum – This is one of Cologne’s oldest museums and shows art from the 13th to the 19th centuries. The collection of paintings represent nearly every period and school.
Schokoladen Museum – This state of the art museum is dedicated to the art of chocolate making. Here you get to know everything you wanted to know about chocolate, the history, technology and best of all you get to sample the chocolate.

Green Card – Neue Maastrichter Strasse 2. Thanks to the deliberately industrial look, the decor may remind you of a construction site in progress and the clientele may appear to be a bit eccentric, but the concept of the Green Card is inexpensive. For a lunch main course you are looking between $6 and $12 and for a dinner main course you are looking between $6 and $19.
Brauhaus im Walfisch – Salzgasse 13. The Brauhaus im Walfisch has a great atmosphere for dining. This step-gabled inn has black and white timbered facades, which date back to 1626 and more importantly; it serves excellent food with many German specialities, which are often influenced by French cuisine. A main course here would set you back between $13 and $23.
Das Kleine Stapelhauschen - Fischmarkt 1-3. This is one of the most popular wine taverns in Cologne. It has a spectacular view of the old fish-market square and the Rhine. The main reason for coming here is wine, but the cuisine is also excellent. The specialty is Rheinsicher sauerbraten with almonds, raisins and potato dumplings. A main course here is between $10 and $33

Museum – Zulpicher Platz 9. This is a student hangout. The main emphasis here is on partying and everyone is invited. The Museum is usually crowed, but a great place to let your hair down. The average cost is about $7.
Aceton – luxemburger Strave 46. This is a cool student bar. The DJ plays a variety of music, which is generally good. Electronic, Hip Hop and Easy Listening all have a place here, and occasionally they also have live music or a film. The average cost is about $10.
Deutzer Bahnhof – Ottoplatz 7. This is a loud and lively establishment. They have live music as well as soul, disco and Top 40 hits with plenty of Kolsch beer providing a party atmosphere. The average cost is about $19.
