Cuzco Travel Guide for backpackers

Cuzco is the centre of the South American travel network seen in the same light as Kathmandu in Nepal. It is the archaeological capital of the Americas and also the ancient Inca capital whose remains can still be seen here today. It is a great place to start the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu following the original trail the Incas took to their ancient Andean city in the clouds.

Here, you can experience an age-old culture that is very different to your 20th century way of life.

DAILY BUDGET in CUZCO - For drinks and food think about $10-$15 per day; for taxis around town think $1,to the airport $4 and for budget accommodation with breakfast $4-$9 so a full day with sights and grub and lodging a backpacker could make it on $20-$25.

Plaza de Armas - here is the original Inca capital, heart of the city;two flags fly here, the red and white Peruvian flag and the rainbow flag representing the four quarters of the Inca Empire.

Museo Inca - A fine old colonial house now housing ancient Inca metal and gold work, jewellery, and real Inca MUMMIES! Expect an entrance fee of $1 per person - well worth a visit.

La Catedral - This lies at the head of Plaza de Armas,a very imposing cathedral. Here you will find loads of paintings from the Cuzco school of Art dating from the 16th and 17th century. Please be respectful in this magnificent buiding.

El Ayllu Cafe - this lies next to the La Catedral, great for cheap nosh from breakfast onwards (opens very early)

El Nevado - here you can get big set meals at low,low prices; it is situated just off the main Plaza along the first block Plateros.

Trotamundos - this lies in Plaza de Armas and has a bit of everything and is popular as a late night bar/cafe.
Add your favourite cheap eat!

Cross Keys Pub - In Plaza de Armas; has pool tables, dartboard, and acts as a great meeting place for backpackers. Happy hours 1800-1900 and 2100-2130.

Paddy O'Flaherty's - Also in Plaza de Armas, on the south side; don't rush up the stairs here to grab a pint of Guiness, remember you are over 3000 metres in elevation! Here, not only good beer but also great pub grub.

Tumi's Video Bar - Lies just off the main square; you've got pool tables ,darts and really good nosh. There is also a big 52 inch TV showing newly released videos.

Mandela's Bar - Mandela's bar is a great, english speaking bar, large selection of drinks with rooftop lounge seats. The owners/bar tenders are very friendly, and even after being away for a year I still keep in touch with them.
