Czech Republic Travel Guide for backpackers

This is a country that offers something for everyone. It has mountains to climb and spas to relax in, fast paced modern cities and quiet little villages lost in time to castles and architecture of Gothic, renaissance, and baroque style. Festivals adorn the calendar and nearly every day belongs to one or another saint. From commemorating the musical genius of Mozart to the Paleni Carodejnic, once the unhappy 'Burning of the Witches' and now a time of gigantic bonfires, the Czech Republic will have something of interest going at any given time.

Prague Tabor

Prague - Prague's medieval centre is still standing and its cobbled lanes and ancient courtyards lie in the shadow of a castle that is 1100 years old.

Karlovy Vary - The oldest of the Bohemian spas, Karlovy Vary has an ageless Victorian air, with graceful colonnades and elegant boulevards.

Krivoklat - Traveling to this sleepy little village and its 13th century castle is a joy in itself, with beautiful scenery and a pristine forest, now the Krivoklat Protected Landscape Region, a UNESCO 'biosphere preservation' area.

Moravian Karst - Canyons and caves, some bearing traces of prehistoric human remains, are found in this heavily-wooded and hilly area.

Moravske Slovacko Region - The people in this region are the coolest in the land, they are easy-going and energetic, and welcome you with tales and legends and traditional folk culture.

DAILY BUDGET in CZECH REPUBLIC - Accommodation in Prague matches most Western European countries and can be expensive, as are most of the biggest tourist centres and Bohemian spas. But elsewhere, if you are prepared to camp or stay in cheap hostels, self cater, or grab some pub grub; you could scrape by on the smell of an oil rag and US$16 a day. If, however, you want something a little more righteous, then look at spending US$120, for a room in a private home or one of the better hostels, using public transport and eating at a slightly superior restaurant. Remember in the off-season many of the bottom-feeders' hotels drop their prices by a third or more.

May, June and September are the best time to visit, with April and October being somewhat colder, and therefore somewhat cheaper. Backpackers will find students packing out the hostels in July/August. Castles, museums and other paying attractions generally close in October to April.
