Dakar Travel Guide for backpackers


Dakar is a large, vibrant seaport of 2 million people. It's crowded, noisy and totally exciting. The food is delicious and the nightlife with it's varied music scene is awesome. Dakar's atmosphere and vibes makes it one of the most popular cities for visitor's to West Africa.  

DAILY BUDGET in DAKAR - If backpackers eat at food stalls or self service cafe's and stay in budget accommodation they should get away on $20-$28 a day.

Explore - The main attraction is the city itself, spend time wandering around the bustling streets, discover the open air market's and brush up on your haggling skill's. For a taste of the real Africa try the Market de Tilene at the heart of the Medina, this has all the sounds and smells of a traditional African market with the advantage that it is relatively free of tourists and thieves.

Soumbedioune - West of the centre, it has a fishing beach and market and is particularly good in the late afternoon when the fishing boat's return. It is also home to the Village Artisanal with it's amazing display of art and craftworks.

The IFAN museum - Definately worth a visit as it houses a fabulous collection of West African masks, statues and musical instruments. It is one of the best museums in West Africa and with an entrance fee of $1 is affordable to all but those on the tightest of budget's.

Ile de Nīgore - In the north of Dakar you will find a small fishing village on a lagun with an island in front. itīs one of the surfspots from endless summer one. good fresh food on the beach.

Street vendors - Sell bread and fillings for $1, if you want something more substantial try the Rue Assane Ndoyne where you will find women selling rice and sauce for slightly more.

Chawarma Donald - On the Avenue Pompidou is a backpackers favourite that serves traditional Chawarmas, meat wrapped in bread, for very reasonable prices.

The Ali Baba Snack Bar - On the other side of the road has good food set in classier surroundings but prices are a bit higher.

Club Thiossane - On the Rue Coulibaly is a must for World music fans and is owned by the legendary Youssou N'Dour.

The Bar Goree - On the Boulevard de la Liberation opposite the ferry terminal has cheap beer, snacks and food plus music and dancing most evenings.

Bar Colisee - On the Avenue Lamine Gueye in the same area is a cheap and cheerful option worth checking out.
