Dallas Travel Guide for backpackers

Brought to the world's attention by the slaying of JFK in the sixties, and then the most popular TV soap opera of all time, the long running Dallas, which typified the greed and ruthlessness of big business in this city in Texas, it is nevertheless an interesting place to visit. With the famous Dallas Cowboy football team and its energetic cheerleaders putting a more cheerful spin on its image, and beautiful parks, museums and great shopping, Dallas is a city that should be explored.

DAILY BUDGET in DALLAS - For the hard pressed, cash strapped backpacker who really wants to see the country but doesn't have the moola for a ‘money's no object' visit, by staying in hostels or camping and doing his own catering, a minimum daily budget of around $50 should see him right. If, however, he has saved enough to spend about $100 a day, then a little comfort can be bought at a motel and some decent chow at a restaurant.

Conspiracy Museum - Check out the Conspiracy Museum to see if you agree the 15% or less of Americans who don't believe Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone, as well as gain an insight into a few other assassinations and devious doings of people through the ages.

Dallas Arts District - Take a walk through the 60 acres of the Dallas arts District where the more creative side of mankind can be seen from Renoir to Winston Churchill.

Deep Ellum - Home to the music of such icons as Blind Lemon Jefferson and Leadbelly during the 1920's and 1930's, Deep Ellum is still the centre of live music in Dallas, and today rock, country and alternative sounds can be heard here.
Add your favourite free attraction!

Ali Baba Cafe - At 1905 Greenville Ave, there is great Middle Eastern grub dished up at this tiny little place run by two brothers and their mom, where the main courses start at about $5 a throw.

Sonny Bryan's Smokehouse - It might not located in the sharpest part of town, but this old place is still the best in town for barbeque and the good folk of Dallas scramble to get their hickory-smoked brisket, meaty ribs, or sliced beef sandwiches here.

Highland Park Pharmacy - Straight out of an Archie Andrews comic book this old-time soda fountain and lunch counter serves great breakfasts and sandwiches as well as dispensing medicine.
Add your favourite cheap eat!

The Old Monk - At 2847 N. Henderson, this bar serves a great choice of Belgian beers and single malts that wash down their fantastic Belgian mussels.

The Crew's Inn - At 3215 N. Fitzhugh Ave, this place caters to all that is gay and we don't mean just cheerful, as it was nominated the best gay bar in town by the Dallas Observer.

Pete's Dueling Pianos - At 4980 Belt Line Rd, here you can throw inhibitions to the wind and let rip in lively, loud, and enthusiastic singalongs to tunes thumped out on a couple of baby grand's.
